Congress leader K C Venugopal is likely to meet former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray in Mumbai on Thursday. The meeting, the first between the senior AICC functionary and the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief, holds political significance as it comes after a meeting between Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar and Uddhav on Tuesday.

“Such meetings do happen between top leaders. We are approaching the 2024 general elections and the meeting between the two will further cement Opposition unity in Maharashtra,” a Congress leader from Maharashtra said.

Incidentally, the meeting takes place a day after Thackeray and Pawar held talks for over one-and-a-half hours amid the ongoing public display of contradictions between the Opposition parties on issues such as Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar, a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe on Adani etc.

Maharashtra Congress in-charge H K Patil, who hails from Karnataka, is presently busy there with state Assembly polls around the corner. “Congress at present lacks a senior leader who can coordinate with both NCP and Shiv Sena (UBT) on sensitive issues as well as avoid turning relations sour. This could be the reason why the party is sending its general secretary to Maharashtra to hold talks,” a leader from Uddhav’s camp said.
