2 passengers held with hydroponic weed worth Rs 11.78 crore at Mumbai airport

Both the passengers were arrested in separate cases under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department in separate cases arrested two persons at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Friday after they arrived from Bangkok and allegedly seized contraband worth Rs 11.78 crore from them.

In the first case, on the basis of profiling, the AIU officials intercepted a passenger identified as Bilal Rais Ahmed Sayyad on suspicion that he was carrying some contraband. During his personal search, nothing was found but while checking his trolley bag, 12 single-layered transparent plastic packets were found in the clothes. When plastic packets were opened, hydroponic weed with a net weight of 5,782 grams and worth Rs 5.78 crore was found. Sayyad’s statement was recorded and a case was registered under the NDPS Act against him.

In the second case, another team of AIU officials laid a trap based on specific information and nabbed one Kais Shaikh who was coming from Bangkok. While checking his sky-blue colour trolley bag, the official found several plastic bags wrapped in the clothes. After cutting one plastic bag, the fruit and flowering top of the plant, purported to be hydroponic weed having a strong pungent smell was found. The officer tested the contraband using a field testing kit and got a positive result of the hydroponic weed. The officer then weighed the total plant and found a net weight of 6006 grams worth Rs 6 crore.

Both the passengers were arrested in separate cases under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
