The Panvel Regional Transport Office (RTO), currently operating from a building in Kalamboli, is set to be relocated to Kharghar’s Sector 36 in April, officials said.
The Maharashtra Home Department has approved the administrative and financial requirements for the shift, with official orders issued last week.
For the past 14 years, the RTO office has been functioning from a shared building in Kalamboli.
However, Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) had declared the structure unsafe, leading to the relocation of several government offices from the premises.
Concerns over employee safety prompted senior RTO officials to request alternative space from the Panvel Tehsildar, PMC and CIDCO.
Responding to the request, CIDCO has allotted eight commercial units in a cooperative housing society in Kharghar on a rent. The relocation process is expected to begin by the second week of April, following the completion of formalities.
“The RTO is expected to issue a rental payment cheque to CIDCO by this week, after which the lease agreement will be finalised and possession of the new premises will be handed over,” said a CIDCO official.
CIDCO has also allocated a 2.75 acre plot in Taloja for the construction of a permanent Panvel RTO office. While development charges for the land were paid last year, the site remains underdeveloped because of uneven terrain and waterlogging issues.
The RTO has requested CIDCO to level and prepare the land before construction can begin. Once the site is ready, work on a permanent RTO facility will gain momentum.
