THE PANVEL-KARJAT suburban corridor under MUTP–III, which is expected to significantly boost connectivity between Navi Mumbai and Raigad district, has now crossed 80% physical progress and the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has set a target to complete all remaining work by March 2026. The corridor is one of the biggest suburban expansion projects in recent years.

This is one of the most important suburban expansion projects for the Mumbai region. The Rs 2,782-crore project aims to create a full double-line suburban corridor between Panvel and Karjat, easing congestion on existing routes and cutting travel time for thousands of daily commuters.

Sunil Udasi, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), MRVC, said the corporation is committed to meeting the 2026 deadline. “We are aiming to complete the project by March 2026. Then it will be passed on to the Ministry of Railways for trial run, safety checks, and certification of the station. Then it will be handed over to the Zonal Railway, which creates schedules and deploys personnel for operations. The commissioning date is still premature to say. We are trying to finish the project by March 2026,” he said.

According to MRVC, civil engineering work across the alignment is in advanced stages. Earthwork and construction of major and minor bridges have been largely completed, and all three tunnels have achieved breakthrough, with final lining progressing. Rail flyovers at Panvel and Karjat have seen substantial advancement, with most girders launched and deck slab casting underway.

Station development at Panvel, Chikhale, Mohape, Chowk and Karjat is nearing completion. Passenger-centric facilities, including booking offices, suburban station buildings, foot overbridges, circulating areas and staff quarters are in the finishing stages. Track linking, yard remodelling, ballast formation and platform development are progressing simultaneously across multiple stretches. On the signalling side, electronic interlocking testing has been completed at Mohape and Chowk stations.

Once commissioned, the Panvel–Karjat corridor is expected to reduce travel time by 10–15 minutes for commuters heading towards Karjat and adjoining stations, while offering greater operational flexibility to Central Railway’s suburban network.
