Over 73 percent of accidents in state due to overspeeding: Report

The officials said that 54 percent of the people who succumbed in accidents were occupants of two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

The state highway traffic authorities on Friday released a data which revealed that over-speeding of vehicles has been a major cause of accidents that were reported across Maharashtra last year. The data shows that more than 73 percent of the accidents that took place in the state were due to over-speeding. As against 33,383 accidents that were reported, it was later found that the motorists were driving at above permitted speed in 24,554 instances.

The statistics further show that there has been a 13 percent rise in the number of deaths and accidents in 2022 as compared to 2021. It is revealed that in 2022, 15,224 people had died in accidents across Maharashtra in 33,383 cases as against 13,528 people losing their lives in 29,477 accidents in 2021.

The officials said that 54 percent of the people who succumbed in accidents were occupants of two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

With 1,634 accidents, Pune (rural) area has recorded the highest number of accidents in the state in 2022 with 923 fatalities. In Nashik (rural) 912 people lost their lives in accidents while 841 and 641 people succumbed to injuries sustained in accidents in Ahmednagar and Solapur (rural) respectively.

Officials said that speeding has been a major concern for accidents, as out of 24,554 accidents, 10,617 were fatal ones in which 11,493 died while 12,041 were non-fatal crashes.

Also, 335 crashes had taken place when the driver was under the influence of alcohol of which 126 of them were reported as fatal ones which took the life of 133 people while the cause of 1,448 crashes were wrong-side driving.
Another data shows that in the 24-hour long day, a high number of accidents have been taking place between 6pm and 9pm as it shows that 6666 accidents had taken place during that time frame in which 3,293 people had died.

Between 3pm and 6pm, 5,696 accidents were reported in Maharashtra and 2,492 people died in those crashes.
The data also shows that more than 87 percent of the accidents have taken place on a straight road as it revealed that out of 33,383 accidents, 29,112 crashes have taken place in straight roads causing the death of 13,130 while the remaining were either on curvy roads or junctions.

Also, 1,004 accident-prone spots have been identified as black spots. In Mumbai, there are 48 black spots while Aurangabad and Ahmednagar have 64 and 56 black spots, while Dhule has 54 and Navi Mumbai has 52 black spots.
