As Mumbai received heavy rainfall with the arrival of monsoon on Sunday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued an ‘orange’ alert for the city and its neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar for Tuesday.

Sushma Nair, scientist at IMD Mumbai, attributed the heavy rainfall to three synoptic situations. “There is a low pressure in Odisha, which is expected to move towards Madhya Pradesh.

Furthermore, there is an offshore trough, which is very strong. There is a cyclonic circulation in the northeast Arabian Sea and in adjoining Gujarat coast. Because of these synoptic situations, the westerlies are supposed to gain intensity. These conditions are favourable to the monsoon,” Nair told The Indian Express on Monday.

After Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall in the weekend, the city recorded less intense rainfall on Monday. While the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded rainfall of 47 mm, the coastal Colaba observatory recorded 67 mm on Monday.

The rainfall monitoring system of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), meanwhile, recorded 15.43 mm of rainfall in the western suburbs, followed by 11.5 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 11.5 mm in the island city.

The IMD’s Santacruz observatory, meanwhile, observed a temperature of 30.8 degree Celsius and the Colaba observatory recorded 30.4 degree Celsius — both one degree below the normal.
