An 81-year-old woman died after a BEST bus allegedly knocked her down while she was on her way to a temple near her home in Mulund Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Usha Jamnadeas Khernani. According to the police, she was staying on the second floor of the Prakash Kunj building on N S Road, Mulund (West), along with her son and his family. The accident occurred around 10.20 am, just around 200 metres away from her house.
She left home at her usual time for the Bileshwar Mahadev temple near Panch Rasta, said the police. A bus allegedly came at high speed and hit her near Panch Rasta, running over her left hand and left leg.
Soon after the accident, people gathered at the spot, and one of them, Rashmin Kothari, was her son Dhiren Khernani’s friend. Kothari identified her and informed Dhiren about the accident.
The woman suffered injuries and was rushed to the Agarwal hospital in Mulund, where she was declared dead during treatment. The driver did not flee the accident scene, and the police took him into custody.
Dhiren, who rushed to the hospital from his son’s house, said, “My mother had serious injuries to her left hand, leg and the left side of her head and forehead.”
“Around 10 am, that was her routine to visit the temple. She was my strength at this age; my mother was very healthy and had no illness, and followed a routine every day,” said Dhiren.
“There is no sense of driving, and no one cares about human life walking on the road and footpath. The traffic police just clicked the picture to complete their target of challan and do not bother about how motorists are driving,” added Dhiren, who is in the real estate business.
The Mulund police registered a case of accidental death due to rash and negligent driving against the best bus driver, said a police officer.
