Shiv Sena’s Rahul Narwekar Thursday withdrew his candidature for the March 20 Legislative Council polls, thus paving a way for the unopposed election of the remaining nine candidates across parties for as many seats.
Unlike BJP which managed to get the support of MNS MLAs for two of its candidates, Vinod Tawde and Pandurang Phundkar, Sena was not in a position to ensure the required numbers with help from Independents or smaller parties.
The only Sena candidate now left in the fray is Neelam Gorhe.
While Congress’s three candidates are Legislative Council chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh, Haribhau Rathod and Chandrakant Raghuvanshi, the NCP candidates are Hemant Takle, Kiran Pawaskar and Anand Thakur.
Congress sources said the CM spoke to Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray urging him to pull out Narwekar from the race as any uncertainty on candidates would trigger horse-trading.
