Maharashtra Minister for Ports and Fisheries Nitesh Rane performed the ground-breaking ceremony of a passenger jetty and a terminal building at Radio Club near the Gateway of India in Mumbai’s Colaba area Thursday.

The ground-breaking ceremony was conducted just a week after Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar allocated Rs 229 crore for the jetty and terminal at Radio Club, which local residents had opposed citing traffic and other issues. Officials said the project was fast-tracked since it was part of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s 100-day programme.

Speaking about the jetty and the opposition to it, Rane said the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has already cleared the concerns and doubts of residents regarding the project and the new jetty will ease the pressure on the one at Gateway of India.

“The existing facilities at the jetty at the Gateway of India are inadequate for passengers, causing problems for the elderly, women and children. This proposed jetty will help reduce that pressure,” the minister said after the ceremony which was attended by MMB officials, including Chief Executive Officer P Pradeep.

The terminal building near the iconic Gateway of India will span 80 square metres and will have a 350-person capacity amphitheatre, berthing jetty, approach jetty, fire safety system, and CCTV, besides gardening and beautification works. “A soil test has also been conducted at the site,” an MMB official said.
