A 22-year-old volunteer with an NGO was convicted and sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment by the sessions court on Tuesday for raping a minor girl in 2011. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Balkrishna Sarvankar.
The victim,a 16-year-old resident of Dharavi,was a volunteer at the NGO. In her deposition,the victim mentioned having met the accused twice earlier for work.
On June 4,2011,the victim participated in a street play on domestic violence and crime against women by the NGO. It was raining heavily on her way back and she stopped by at an acquaintances house in a secluded lane for a glass of water,the victim had told the court.
According to the prosecution,the victim ran into Sarvankar who invited her to his house in the same lane and the victim agreed. When she entered his house,he bolted the door and raped the girl,the prosecution said,adding that he threatened the girl with dire consequences if she spoke about the incident to anyone.
The victim,however,managed to convince the accused that she would not speak to anyone and returned to her single mother,who worked as a domestic help in the vicinity. When the victim was returning home,a neighbour noticed her condition and asked her what the matter was. The victim told the neighbour,who suggested she report the matter to the police. A day after the incident,the victim was taken for a medical test and a case of rape was registered with the Dharavi police station.
The accused was out on bail two months after the arrest. He was pursuing a course in industrial training. The victim is currently in a welfare home and is continuing with her studies.
