The Thane police Thursday registered an FIR against NCP leader Jitendra Awhad at Hill Line Police Station for his alleged remarks against the Sindhi community during a party function in the Ulhasnagar area on May 27.
During the function, when Awhad spoke, he made some reference to the Sindhi community. A clip later went viral and the comment did not go down well with the local Sindhi community that form a chunk of the population in Ulhasnagar.
The FIR was registered under Sections 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, etc) 153B, 295A (deliberate and malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings of any class of citizens) and 298 (deliberate intention of wounding the religious feelings of any person) of the IPC. The FIR was registered based on a statement given by a local hotelier.
Later, several members of the community, including the local MLA, approached the Hill Line police station where an FIR was registered against Awhad. No arrest has been made in the case till now.
This is the third FIR registered against Awhad by the Thane police in the past eight months. Two other FIRs were registered in November last year, one on charges of molestation and the other for halting the screening of a movie. In the latter case, he was placed under arrest as well.
