Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera Wednesday said that the controversy over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s statement on Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar was a BJP ploy to divert public attention from the alleged Adani scam.

“There is no truth in the speculation that there is a split in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) over the Savarkar issue. This alliance is strong. Each party has its own views, everyone is free to express views. Communication is important in a democracy and that communication is still present in the Maha Vikas Aghadi. Savarkar’s issue is being used by the BJP to divert public attention from the burning issues of the country,” said Khera.

The Congress leader further said, “Rahul Gandhi asked who has invested Rs 20,000 crore in the Adani Group. This investment involves a citizen of China, who is that person? We have demanded that the Adani scam be investigated by a Joint Parliamentary Committee but why is the Modi government scared of the inquiry?” He added that Rahul Gandhi will continue to raise questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘relationship’ with Gautam Adani despite being disqualified from the Lok Sabha and asked to vacate his bungalow.

When asked about MVA ally Uddhav Thackeray’s differences with Rahul Gandhi on the Savarkar issue, Khera said a healthy democracy encourages differences of opinion. “We believe that all ideologies should co-exist without anyone claiming superiority… We even have a Lok Sabha MP who is a follower of Godse. Has she been disqualified?” asked the Congress leader.

Khera said in a multicultural society like India, everyone will have different idols and opinions. “But when it comes to the country, let’s come together and talk about the issues affecting it,” he said and asked whether the BJP approved Savarkar’s views on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

“If you check history, there are many points about Savarkar’s relationship with the RSS. Should we talk about all of that,” Khera remarked.
