Family members of 50-year-old Ravindra Chindu Deshmukh from Murbad have claimed that the man was among those who attended the April 16 event at Kharghar and died after being hospitalised for 10 days due to heatstroke.
However, the district administration has not included his name among the victims of the tragedy where 14 persons died of heatstroke after assembling on an open ground for the Maharashtra Bhushan Award event in Khargar where social activist Appasaheb Dharmadhikari was honoured.
According to the relatives Deshmukh, a driver by profession and a follower of Dharmadhikari, had gone to Kharghar two days before the event and returned after the event. Next day, he developed some health complications and high temperature.
“Deshmukh was rushed to a private hospital in Ulhasnagar, from where he was referred to JJ Hospital. He was admitted to JJ on April 25 and died next morning,” said Pravin Deshmukh, a relative.
“Local taluka administration refused to include Deshmukh’s name as one of the victims of the incident. If a person dies due to a condition that was developed due to heatstroke, then why he was not being considered as the victim? We urgedthe government to conduct an inquiry and ascertain the exact cause of his death. He had no comorbidities,” Pravin said.
Deshmukh is survived by his wife. Sources at the JJ Hospital said that no patient has died of heatstroke at their hospital recently.
As many as 14 people died in the Kharghar heatstroke tragedy. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of those died in the incident.
