To ensure smooth and transparent ticket checking, the Mumbai division of the Central Railway (CR) has introduced body cameras for its ticket checkers along with an online provision through QR code to accept fines from passengers who do not possess valid travel tickets, railway officials said.

A total of 50 body cameras have been provided on a pilot project basis to local train ticket collectors, said Shivaji Sutar, the Central Railway public relations officer, told The Indian Express. The number of cameras will be increased if required based on the response from the initiative, added the official.

According to a CR official, body cameras would help prevent misbehaviour and violent acts which are usually reported to the travelling ticket examiners (TTEs) at the time of ticket checking. Moreover, it would also help detect any discrepancy during ticket examination, increase accountability and instill professionalism and protect the reputation of staff.

Besides, the local train ticket checkers have been provided with a QR code for accepting payments in terms of fines from passengers. Sutar said that so far the officials were collecting cash as fine from passengers who travel without valid tickets. “Now we have tied up with SBI YONO mobile application which can be downloaded on mobile phones of ticket examiners. A terminal ID has been created and the payment can be made through UPI, which will go directly into the Railways’ account,” he explained.

With the introduction of QR code, the passenger can easily make the payment to the ticket collecting officials – a system which will reduce cash handling and also provide a safe and secure mode of transaction on the lines of promoting the Digital India Mission of Prime Minister of India, the CR official stated.

The two new initiatives were introduced on the occasion of the inauguration of the newly renovated TTE Running Room at LTT Station. The renovated facility is equipped with an open gymnasium, meals at subsidised rates to TTE.

Konkan railway division is already using QR code for collecting fines from erring passengers. The Western Railway is also planning to introduce QR code facility and body cameras, said an official.
