THE BOMBAY High Court Monday directed four city authorities to come up with a holistic policy to reduce traffic congestion on city streets.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai traffic police, Urban development department and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) were directed by the High Court to take combative measures to decongest city roads.
The court suggested measures such as restricting the number of cars per family and promotion of inland water transport for faster commute.
The court, however, said the feasibility of waterways as a transport means could be undertaken only after assessing security issues first. The observations were made while hearing a public interest litigation on the lack of parking spaces in the city.
The petitioners had sought to lift a ban by the BMC on parking below flyovers to utilise the empty space.
The court asked the BMC if it was willing to revoke the ban, which was opposed by the civic body during the last hearing citing security concerns.
