Mumbai police book UP resident for giving triple talaq to wife over phone

Investigators said the prime accused, Shehbaz Ahmed, remarried later following which his first wife approached the Ghatkopar police and registered the FIR under section 4 (pronouncing talaq in spoken, written or electronic form) of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights of Marriage) Act 2019 in addition to relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

A police officer said they have summoned the three accused but are yet to make any arrest in the case.

According to the FIR, the woman married Shehbaz Ahmed in 2016 at Baripur village in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district. The two resided with Ahmed’s brother Salman and sister-in-law Nujhat Zabeen there.

The complainant alleged that the trio often taunted her for bringing insufficient dowry and said her husband did not work due to which they faced financial issues.

In 2017, the couple moved to Ghatkopar in Mumbai where her parents resided and she found him work at a local shop. The couple also had a daughter. A few years later, Ahmed returned to Uttar Pradesh and the complainant followed him there. They often faced financial issues and Ahmed assaulted her for dowry, she alleged.

In 2024, they had another daughter after which, the woman said, her brother-in-law and his wife started telling her husband that she could not bear a son. Eventually, Ahmed threw her out of the house, forcing her to return to Mumbai. She alleged that her husband called her later and pronounced talaq.
