Mumbai: Part of five-storey building collapses; one dead, 21 rescued

According to the fire brigade official, a few people are likely to be still  trapped inside the debris. Mumbai Fire Brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) continue to conduct search and rescue operations.

A portion of ground plus five-storey resident building collapsed near Mumbai’s Khar Gymkhana on Tuesday.  A child who was rescued from the debris was declared dead at the Bhabha Hospital.  Two injured have been rushed to the hospital and 21 others were rescued. The incident took place around 1:11 pm when part of a staircase of the building came crashing down.

According to the fire brigade official, a few people are likely to be still  trapped inside the debris. Mumbai Fire Brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) continue to conduct search and rescue operations.

Four fire engines along with rescue vans, an ambulance, local civic officials, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and police personnel rushed to the spot.

The local Congress corporator Asif Zakaria said,  “the locals told me that the building is about 40-years old and some repair work at the staircase side was going on. The BMC had issued them some notice for structural audit. The portion of the building has been tilted after the collapsed.”

Officials from the BMC said, “our priority is search and rescue. The cause of the incident will be ascertained once the operation is over.”
