Meetings of various committees of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will continue to be held online. A letter from Urban Development Department (UDD) sent to municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has clarified that even though the proposal of conducting physical meetings of the BMC and other corporations is under consideration, no decision in the regard has been taken so far.

UDD’s letter came in response to last week’s order by the Bombay High Court in which BMC was directed to decide on a physical meeting, instead of online, of the Standing Committee. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Vinod Mishra had filed a petition in the high court seeking directions on conducting physical meetings of the committees.

The Maharashtra Cabinet on Wednesday decided to take a stand in support of reservation in promotion in government jobs for Vimukti Jati (VJ), Nomadic Tribes (B, C & D) and Special Backward Classes (SBC) in the state and file an additional affidavit in the Supreme Court in connection to the ongoing petitions challenging the quota.

The Cabinet’s decision comes a few weeks after the state filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that only Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) reservation in promotion are as per the Constitution, effectively suggesting that quota granted to VJ, NT and SBC categories for promotions in government jobs in Maharashtra in 2004 is unconstitutional.

An email containing malware was sent to thousands of people in Maharashtra — including police and government officials — from the purported ID of a senior inspector on Monday morning. The email is suspected to have originated at Rawalpindi in Pakistan, Maharashtra cyber cell officers said on Wednesday.

Yashasvi Yadav, Special IG (Maharashtra Cyber), said, “The intention is suspected to be an attempt to induct malacious programme for data theft or ransomware.” The email ID appeared to belong to Rajesh Nagawade, senior inspector of east region cyber police station. Nagawade didn’t respond to phone calls.
