Govt trying to create rift between Maratha, OBC communities, says Jarange; Hake hits back

Activist Manoj Jarange on Friday accused the Maharashtra government of trying to create tension between the Maratha and OBC communities, vowing that he won't “let it happen”.

He said there are 8-9 people in the government who have "hatred" for the Maratha community and their names will reach the public domain at the “right” time.

The government is thrusting new leaders to the fore and moving others aside to create a rift between the Maratha and OBC communities, he said, stressing that those protesting over their demand for non-dilution of the OBC quota are not at fault.

OBC activists Laxman Hake and Navnath Waghmre have been fasting in the Jalna district since June 13 demanding that the government scrap the draft notification that recognises Kunbis as “sage soyare” (blood relatives) of Maratha community members. The agrarian Kunbi community enjoys OBC status in the state.

Hitting back, Hake, who is on a hunger strike since the past nine days seeking a written promise that OBC quota will not be diluted to accommodate the Maratha community, accused Jarange of double speak. He brushed aside the Maratha quota activist's warning that he would take part in the assembly polls, claiming "Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Indira Gandhi were defeated, so who is Jarange". (PTI)

Quota stir: Ministers meet OBC activists on behalf of govt, urge them to end fast

Three Maharashtra ministers and a member of the legislative council on Friday met OBC activists Laxman Hake and Navnath Waghmare and urged them to end their fast, which entered the ninth day.

The delegation comprising ministers Atul Save, Uday Samant and Girish Mahajan, and MLC Gopichand Padalkar met the activists at the protest site at Wadigodri village in Jalna district. Newly-elected Shiv Sena MP Sandipan Bhumre was also present.

Mahajan also called up Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis from the stage and made them talk to the protesting activists.

The two OBC activists are opposed to activist Manoj Jarange's demand over implementation of the draft notification that recognises Kunbis as “sage soyare” (blood relatives) of Maratha community members. Kunbi, an agrarian group, falls under the OBC category, and Jarange has been demanding that Kunbi certificates be issued to all Marathas, thus making them eligible for quota in government jobs and education. Waghmare also said that their protest will continue till the government gives in writing that the OBC reservation won't be disturbed. (PTI)

Pune Porsche case: Is it not confinement if juvenile is kept in custody after bail, asks HC

The Bombay High Court on Friday queried if it amounted to confinement when the juvenile accused in the Pune Porsche case was granted bail but was taken back in custody and kept in an observation home.

Activist Manoj Jarange on Thursday alleged that the Maharashtra government's stand that inclusion of "sage soyare" term in the Maratha reservation notification will not stand legal scrutiny indicated that it was against such a provision.

Speaking to reporters a day before, minister Girish Mahajan had said that Jarange was demanding reservation for `sage soyare' (those related by birth or marriage) of Marathas who possess the Kunbi caste certificate, but it will not stand legal scrutiny if challenged in the court.

"As far as I know, such a reservation cannot be given, but if there is a workable solution, the government will pursue it," the BJP leader had said.

Reacting to the statement, Jarange told reporters here that he was firm on his stand that Marathas should get reservation in the Other Backward Class (OBC) category.

Kunbi, an agrarian community, enjoys OBC status in Maharashtra. Jarange has been demanding that Kunbi certificates be issued to all Marathas, making them eligible for quota in government jobs and education. (PTI)

Maratha youths ending lives as Jarange is creating confusion: OBC quota activist

The two activists whose indefinite fast over the OBC quota entered the eighth day on Thursday have alleged that Maratha youths are ending their lives due to confusion created by campaigner Manoj Jarange.

Laxman Hake and Navnath Waghmare have been agitating at Wadigodri village in Jalna district demanding that OBC reservation not be diluted.

Mumbai News Live Updates: Bombay High Court to hear plea from the aunt of a juvenile accused in the Pune Porsche crash case.

The Bombay High Court is expected to hear a habeas corpus plea on Friday from the aunt of a juvenile accused in the Pune Porsche crash case. She is seeking his release and claiming that he was sent to custody in an "unlawful and arbitrary" manner. On June 14, the court declined immediate relief to the child in conflict of law (CCL) and said it would hear the plea on June 20. However, as the plea was not listed today, the lawyers mentioned the same before a division bench of Justices Bharati H Dangre and Manjusha A Deshpande, which posted the hearing to Friday, June 21.

It has been a month since the crash where two IT engineers Aneesh Awadhiya and his friend Ashwini Koshta, both 24, died after a speeding Porsche car, allegedly driven by a 17-and-a-half-year-old boy in an inebriated state, hit their motorcycle at Pune’s Kalyani Nagar junction around 2.30 am on May 19. World T20: What Virat Kohli’s five runs from nine balls tell about India’s batting

Three innings, nine balls, five runs. The numbers tell a sorry tale of Virat Kohli’s World Cup. But if there is a Kohli story that the cold, stone numbers don’t tell, it is how he has been at the heart of India’s brave new philosophy at this T20 World Cup. He has failed, so far, in translating the gung-ho approach into concrete runs, but that is only incidental in the larger scheme of how India is embracing modern ethos without dispensing entirely with the old-guard.
