Mumbai’s long-awaited Metro Line-3 (Aqua Line)—the city’s first fully underground Metro corridor—will become fully operational from Thursday, with passenger services beginning on the entire 33.5-km stretch between Aarey JVLR and Cuffe Parade.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the final phase of the project on Wednesday, a 10.99-km section between Acharya Atre Road (Worli Naka) and Cuffe Parade, completing the Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ corridor that has been opened in stages over the past year.
The first phase, between Aarey and Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), was inaugurated in October 2024, followed by the second phase, BKC to Acharya Atre Road, in May 2025. Wednesday’s inauguration marks the final leg, making the entire line operational.
Built at a total cost of ₹37,276 crore, Metro Line-3 comprises 27 stations (26 underground and one at-grade) and will operate 31 air-conditioned trains at five-minute intervals during peak hours. Fares will range from ₹10 to ₹70, offering an affordable and modern commuting option across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Once opened, commuters will be able to travel between Aarey JVLR and Cuffe Parade within an hour, connecting key business hubs such as Bandra-Kurla Complex, Nariman Point, Fort, Lower Parel, and SEEPZ/MIDC. The corridor also provides seamless integration with CSMT, Churchgate, and Mumbai Central stations, linking the suburban, monorail and other Metro networks.
According to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), the line is expected to carry 13 lakh passengers daily, helping reduce 6.65 lakh vehicular trips, saving 3.54 lakh litres of fuel per day, and cutting CO₂ emissions by over 2.6 lakh tonnes annually.
Officials said the Aqua Line will significantly ease congestion on suburban railways, reduce travel time across north–south corridors, and provide a clean, efficient, and sustainable transport alternative for the city.
