Mumbai: Man held for duping former employer

According to the police officials, the accused has been identified as Prasanjit Bera, who hails from West Bengal and has worked with the complainant for over a decade.

MumbaiThe Kalachowkie police said that the accused was previously arrested in the case.

A 35-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly duping his former employer of Rs 60 lakh and about 50 grams silver under the pretext of starting a new business in Mumbai.

The Kalachowkie police said that the accused was previously arrested in the case. However, he was arrested again after the court issued a non-bailable warrant when he failed to appear for the case proceedings.

According to the police officials, the accused has been identified as Prasanjit Bera, who hails from West Bengal and has worked with the complainant for over a decade.

An officer said, “Around 2022, Bera told his employer that he wanted to start business and also floated a company named J B Silver. The complainant offered to help and between April 2022 and April 2024, he took Rs 60 lakh and 50 g silver following which he escaped with the money.”

Later, as the accused stopped responding to his calls and messages, the 46-year-old jeweller lodged a complaint with the police after which Bera was traced and arrested on June 3. “The accused was in our custody. However, he was subsequently remanded in judicial custody and Bera was later granted bail,” an officer said.

The police further added that the accused then switched off his mobile phone and escaped without informing anyone and because he failed to appear before the police, a non-bailable warrant was issued against him.

“With the help of local informers, we managed to get his new mobile number after which he was traced at his native place in West Bengal and was arrested,” an officer said.
