Amid Diwali festivities, Mumbai generated over 3,000 metric tonnes of additional garbage equivalent to 162 truckloads, over the last week.

While the city generates 6,900 metric tonnes of average solid waste daily (as per data until September), the quantum of waste generated per day jumped to 7,300 metric tonnes daily during ongoing festivities — marking an increase of 400 metric tonnes per day.

Data procured from the BMC showed that while 6,988 metric tonnes (MT) waste was generated until October 18, 7,457 MT garbage was generated on October 19, 7,799 MT waste was collected on October 20 and 7,381 MT of waste was generated on October 21 — amounting to an average of 7,300 MT of waste daily in the past five days.

According to officials, with the backlog clearance, the total quantum of actual waste generated over the past few days touched 600-700 metric tonnes daily, amounting to 3,000 metric tonnes of waste cumulatively over the past five days.

Of the total additional 3,000 metric tonnes of waste generated, the civic body said that it has already disposed of 2,075 tonnes of waste at the Kanjurmarg and Deonar landfills, while the remaining 1,000 tonnes have been distributed across various refuse transfer stations for clearing on a war footing.

In a bid to tackle the rapid uptick in generated waste spurred by the festivities, the BMC deployed sanitation workers in double shifts, while all collection vehicles and compactors were pressed on ground to facilitate prompt collection of garbage from the roads. Kiran Dighavkar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) said, “BMC teams worked round the clock to manage the surge of an additional load of nearly 3,000 tonnes of garbage in a few days brought on by festival season. The timely clearance reflects BMC’s readiness and the dedication of our sanitation staff.”

According to the civic body, over 2,000 additional staffers were roped in as a part of the pre and post Diwali cleanliness drive between October 13 and October 24, while overall 7,145 labourers were deployed collectively. Besides this, over 5000 staffers were deployed under the Pink army to carry out cleanliness, while 800 staffers were deployed in the night shift.
