Mumbai Gas Leakage: A gas-like smell across western and eastern suburbs from Powai to Mira Road created panic among Mumbaikars living in these areas for a brief while late Thursday.

The Mumbai police received complaints from Powai, Chembur Chakala, Goregaon, up to Mira Road.

As the news spread over social media, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s  (BMC) Disaster Cell chief Mahesh Narvekar said that they were still checking the source of leakage. The smell had begun to abate after about 30 to 40 minutes.

The BMC disaster cell said it received first reports of an “unknown odour’” at 10:45 pm from various parts of Eastern Suburbs such as Chembur, Mankhurd, Govandi, Chandivali, Powai, Ghatkopar, Andheri, Borivali National Park. Nine fire engines were mobilised at various places to find out the source of leakage, the disaster cell said.

In response to rumours that gas had leaked from the Rashtriya Chemical Fertiliser plant, the Trombay division police ran a check and said: “there was no leakage information from RCF”.

Mahanagar Gas Limited also out a statement saying there was no leakage from any of its pipes.

“Since late evening, MGL has been receiving complaints of gas smell from various parts of Mumbai. Our emergency teams have spread out to sites from where complaints have been received. So far we have not come across any breach in our pipeline system which could result in leakage of gas,” MGL said.
