After a rainy August, Mumbai is set to experience another spell of torrential showers, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounding a fresh yellow alert for the city owing to the possibility of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

While Mumbai has been placed under a yellow alert between Wednesday and Friday, an orange alert has been issued in the neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar for Thursday. Meanwhile, Raigad district will remain under an orange alert between Wednesday and Friday.

Over the past few days, Mumbai has been experiencing intermittent spells of light rainfall. Data from the IMD shows that between Sunday and Monday morning, the Santacruz station received 7.4 mm of rainfall, whereas the Colaba coastal observatory registered 3.4 mm.

Following a brief lull over the weekend, the city woke up to overcast skies as passing showers swept the region throughout Monday.

According to weather forecasters, rain activity is slated to gather further momentum in the next couple of days. While no alerts have been issued for the city and neighbouring districts on Tuesday, a yellow alert will come into effect from Wednesday onwards.

Athreya Shetty, an independent weather observer, attributed the intensifying showers to a new low-pressure area developing in the Bay of Bengal.

“At present, there is a new low-pressure area developing over Odisha in the Bay, and this system is gradually expected to cross and start moving north-westwards over the next 24 hours. This will pull in the monsoon moisture winds, increasing rain activity,” said Shetty.

He added that rain activity will further intensify in the latter half of the week. “Around Friday, the system is expected to reach the tri-junction of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. During this period, a trough is likely to form and run from the system to North Konkan,” Shetty further said.

So far, suburban Mumbai has clocked in over 2,501 mm of rainfall since June, of which over 1,184 mm of rainfall was recorded in August alone. Meanwhile, the island city division has received 1,662 mm of rain since June.
