Customs officials at the Mumbai airport arrested two passengers coming from Bangkok on Monday and seized four smuggled exotic birds.

The seized birds belonged to species Tarictic/Visayan hornbills (Penelopides panini), which is listed in Appendix-Il of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) and Schedule IV of the newly amended Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and Sulawesi Hornbills (Rhabdotorrhinus exarhatus).

Customs officials nabbed the suspects after they received specific intelligence. The seized Hornbills were concealed in rectangular boxes below the food packets kept in the trolley bags of the passenger to avoid detection, the Customs officials said.

The Customs department handed over Hornbills to the Airlines staff for deportation.

The legal proceedings against the passengers have been initiated as per the provisions of Customs Act, 1962, and Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Both the suspect passengers were later released on bail.
