A SPECIAL court on Thursday rejected an application filed by Videocon Group Chairman Venugopal Dhoot where he had alleged that his arrest by the CBI on December 26 was illegal. The court also rejected separate pleas by Dhoot and his co-accused, former ICICI Bank MD and CEO Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar seeking homecooked food in jail.
“The jail superintendent… is hereby directed to provide medical diet food as per rules only to the applicant/accused ….as per consultation and as per the advice of medical officer of the prison,” the order by special Judge M R Purwar said.
The Kochhars were arrested on December 23 and Dhoot three days later by the CBI in connection with the Videocon loan case. The court also rejected Chanda’s plea for a chair and mattress and Deepak’s plea for a chair, mattress and compression knee stockings. While Chanda Kochhar is lodged in Byculla women’s jail, Deepak and Dhoot are lodged in the Arthur Road jail.
Earlier this week, their lawyers had sought permission for homecooked food for the three in separate pleas stating that they were suffering from various medical ailments.
Kochhar’s lawyer had said that she had vertigo and hyperlipidemia along with a knee issue. It was also submitted that she is ‘extremely frail’, and her health issues may get aggravated if not given access to homecooked food.
Dhoot’s lawyer had submitted that he is diabetic and has a heart condition. His lawyer had also claimed that the CBI had arrested him despite him cooperating with the probe and responding to notices, in violation of Supreme Court-laid down guidelines. The Kocchars have moved the Bombay High Court with a petition claiming that their arrest was illegal.
