A major fire erupted in a multi-storey building in Jogeshwari, Mumbai, on Thursday morning. Firefighters rushed to the scene with several fire tenders to control the blaze.
The fire broke out on the upper floors of the JMS Business Centre at around 10:45 am. The building is located on SV Road, close to Mahatma Gandhi School in Jogeshwari.
According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), at least 50 people were rescued. No casualty has been reported so far.
The video of the incident showed firefighters on aerial ladders involved in an intense firefighting and rescue operations. Nine fire engines and seven jumbo tankers were at the spot fighting the blaze, officials said.
According to MFB, the blaze was labelled as a level 2 blaze around 10.48 am, and the intensity escalated to level 3 around 10.54 am.
Videos showed people stranded on the top floor of the JMS Business Centre. The fire had spread from the 10th to the 11th floors of the building in the 13-storey building.
“The building has a glass facade therefore there is no window and ventilation became a problem after the blaze broke out. Therefore we had to rescue the people by providing them breathing apparatus (BA). We also had to break the glass facade to make sure the trapped smoke was able to escape from inside the building,” a fire officer told The Indian Express.
“The fire broke out inside a commercial building. The presence of computer and electronic appliances intensified the blaze to a large extent for which the flames started to swell up and we had to escalate its levels,” the officer said.
The fire came just two days after Diwali, when four members of a family, including a six-year-old girl, were killed in a building fire in Navi Mumbai’s Raheja Residency Society. Officials from the Navi Mumbai Fire Brigade (NMFB) said the fire was reported around 12.40 am and it took nearly four hours to douse the blaze. The fire hand engulfed at least three floors of the building.
