A 39-year-old man died after an unknown person allegedly mowed him down with a vehicle and made off without offering any medical assistance. The police said the deceased, identified as Shivgulam Shriram Kurmi, was on his way to a washroom near his residence when he met with the accident.
According to police officials, the incident occurred around 6 am on Sunday.
Kurmi, who worked as a construction labourer, lived with his brother Rameshwar and other coworkers and friends in Sewri area.
An officer said, “Kurmi usually started work around 8 am every day. On Sunday, he woke up and went to use the washroom. As he was returning home, an unknown speeding vehicle mowed him down.”
One of the roommates, who learned about the incident, informed Rameshwar, who then went to the spot and found Kurmi unconscious.
Kurmi regained consciousness and allegedly told his elder brother that he was walking on the road when an unknown vehicle hit him from behind. As he fell to the ground, the vehicle ran over him, injuring him grievously.
Rameshwar then informed the police control room and Kurmi was rushed to JJ Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
An officer said, “We have registered a case against an unknown person and are trying to trace the culprit. Our teams have already started scrutinising CCTV footage and have alerted local informers.”
