Sushma Nair, a scientist from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Mumbai, confirmed the onset of the southwest monsoon on Sunday and said that it took place two days ahead of schedule in Mumbai. The weather bureau had predicted the monsoon’s arrival by June 11.
The IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 20 mm of rainfall, while the coastal observatory at Colaba recorded 9 mm of rain on Sunday morning.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) automatic weather systems (AWS), 17.99 mm of rain occurred in the western suburbs, 7.44 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 3.92 mm in the island city.
From early morning, Mumbai’s skyline was covered with dark clouds, and the weather bureau officials said that the cloudy sky would continue throughout the day.
