Moderate rain in Mumbai today, IMD issues ‘green’ alert till tomorrow

IMD scientists told The Indian Express that the intensity of the rain will pick up in the coming week with the weather bureau sounding a ‘yellow’ alert in Mumbai and Thane from Monday (July 17).

Following the revival of monsoon showers in Mumbai with heavy rainfall battering the city on Friday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday morning forecast another day of moderate rain along with heavy showers in isolated pockets.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘green’ alert for Saturday and Sunday. IMD scientists told The Indian Express that the intensity of the rain will pick up further in the coming week with the weather bureau sounding a ‘yellow’ alert in Mumbai and Thane from Monday (July 17).

On Saturday morning, the city woke up to moderate rains and cloudy skies. Data furnished by the IMD showed that between Friday and Saturday until 8.30 am, the weather station in Santacruz recorded 52 mm of showers whereas the coastal observatory in Colaba recorded 73 mm of downpour.

The BMC’s recording apparatus, meanwhile, showed that the maximum rain was received in the western suburbs at 57.63 mm, followed by the island city which recorded 49 mm of rain and the eastern suburbs where 48 mm of rain was registered.

Furthermore, the water stock level rose to 31.16 per cent on Saturday morning, following the continuous downpour on Friday. In 2022, the water levels in the seven lakes which supply water to the city stood at 74.82 per cent.
