Model Bhatia files discharge plea, says had no role in boyfriend’s suicide

Nearly three years after model and actor Lovina Bhatia was charged with abetting the suicide of her boyfriend Kunal Singh, she moved the special CBI court seeking discharge from the case.

Nearly three years after model and actor Lovina Bhatia was charged with abetting the suicide of her boyfriend Kunal Singh, she moved the special CBI court seeking discharge from the case.

Bhatia, who spent nearly a month behind bars, claimed in her application that she had no role to play in the suicide and there was no evidence against her. She claimed in her plea,“On February 6,2008,Kunal and I had a meeting with designer Shamad Khan at Kunal’s Lokhandwala residence in the evening. After the designer left,I went to freshen up and came out after half an hour. When I stepped out,I saw Kunal hanging to the ceiling with a bed sheet. I immediately called my father and informed him. I was no where in the scene.”

The case was handed over to the CBI after Singh’s father Rajendra, who is a colonel with the Army, approached the Bombay High Court seeking CBI’s intervention.

Bhatia, who was booked by CBI under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code, allegedly had a relationship with Kunal, who was married and has two children. Kunal debuted in a Hindi movie Dil hi Dil Main opposite Sonali Bendre and did moderately well down south. According to Bhatia’s statement, one of the reasons for the suicide was Kunal’s depression due to his failure in Bollywood.

Contesting her plea, the CBI counsel Bharat Badami told the court,“The agency has collected enough evidence to establish that Singh and accused were very close to each other. Few witnesses in their statements have claimed that the model and the victim had a lot of fights in the past. His married life was affected due to his involvement with Bhatia.”

Special Judge N P Dhote will continue hearing the plea on Monday. On July 28,this year, the CBI filed an exhaustive chargesheet with statements of as many as 30 witnesses including Bhatia’s close friends and acquaintances from the film industry.
