Mistaken to be thief, 29-yr-old beaten to death

A man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of people who mistook him as a thief in Borivali on Thursday. The deceased turned out to be the brother of a police officer. The police have registered a case against six to seven persons and detained four men for questioning and looking for the other accused.

The deceased has been identified as Praveen Lahane (29). According to the police, on Thursday at around 1.30 am Lahane allegedly entered a society reportedly in an inebriated state. Mistaking him to be a robber, six people and a guard beat him badly.

The police control room received a call from locals about a group assaulting a man. Local police rushed to the spot and rescued the person.

“He was taken to the Shatabdi hospital and after primary medication the police took him to the police station. At the police station Lahane collapsed. While being taken to the hospital again, he died on the way. The inquest panchnama was conducted,” said a senior police officer. Police sources said that there is also the possibility of Lahane suffering a seizure attack.

The body has been sent to JJ Hospital for post-mortem. After the post-mortem report the exact cause of death and timing would be ascertained.

“For now we have registered a case of 304-II (custodial death not amounting to murder) and detained four people and further questioning them,” said DCP (Zone 12) Smita Patil.

The deceased’s brother API Prakash Lahane is posted at Santacruz police station.
