Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Ajit Pawar on Tuesday accepted that he made a mistake by fielding his wife Sunetra Pawar against his cousin Supriya Sule from Baramati in the Lok Sabha polls.
“I love all my sisters. One should not allow politics to enter homes. I made a mistake in fielding Sunetra against my sister. This should not have happened. But the parliamentary board (of NCP) made a decision. Now I feel it was wrong,” Ajit Pawar said in an interview with Marathi news channel ‘Jai Maharashtra’.
Pawar is currently on a statewide ‘Jan Samman Yatra’ as part of his mass outreach programme ahead of the state Assembly polls.
After the split in the united NCP, Ajit Pawar along with a majority of MLAs joined the ruling alliance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena. During Lok Sabha, Pawar fielded his wife Sunetra Pawar against his estranged cousin Supriya Sule, who retained the seat. “It was the decision of the NCP parliamentary board which I followed,” he said.
Ajit Pawar also came out in support of his estranged uncle Sharad Pawar, who is being targeted by the BJP and the Shiv Sena, saying the allies should understand what they are saying. “I will voice my opinion when we sit together,” he said.
Ajit Pawar also clarified that since he is the head of the family and a senior leader, he will not respond to any criticism from Sharad Pawar. He also mentioned that he would only speak about development and not about any criticism against him.
