The police investigation into the murder of 32-year-old Saraswati Vaidya by her live-in-partner—56-year-old Manoj Ramesh Sane— has revealed that he had searched the internet for ways to dispose of a body.

When scanning his phone, the police scrolled through his browsing history and found that on June 4, the day he allegedly killed Vaidya, he searched for ideas on how to ensure that a body doesn’t start decomposing and smelling. He then chopped the body into several parts and boiled them to prevent a foul smell. However, his attempts failed as the stench emanating from the chopped body triggered alarm among the neighbours who reported the matter to the police, sources privy to the probe told The Indian Express.

From his browsing history, police sources also discovered that he frequented pornographic sites. “Since he could not remember names of porn sites he had also noted down names of 7-8 porn sites on a paper which has been seized,” the police source added.

Sources close to the probe into the gruesome killing said, “During interrogation Sane admitted that Vaidya would often complain and quarrel with him about him not being able to keep her ‘happy and satisfied’. It would also enrage her when he looked at any other woman.”

Sane allegedly killed Vaidya on June 4 in their rented flat —704, Geeta Aakashdeep Cooperative Housing Society, Geeta Nagar—in phase-7 of Mira Road. Later, he chopped her body into innumerable small pieces using tree and tile cutters. He then boiled the pieces in a cooker and also roasted some of them to dispose the lot in a nullah nearby. Initially, he told the police that Vaidya had killed herself and fearing that police would blame him, he chopped off the body to dispose it easily.

Police said that Saraswati Vaidya has four sisters, and all of them grew up in Jankidevi Apte Anath Ashram in Ahmednagar. After turning 18, they all left the orphanage, and later the three of them began living in the MMR region. The Vaidya sisters initially lived in Aurangabad with her mother after their parents separated, but were admitted to an ashram after their mother’s death.
Sisters seek strictest punishment for Sane.

“The sisters have requested us to make the strongest possible case against him so that he is punished strictly,” said an officer. When one of them saw the photo of Vaidya’s long hair in a ponytail that Sane had kept on the kitchen platform, she got emotional, saying she was very fond of her long hair, sources said.

Naya Nagar police on Friday recorded the statement of the victim’s three sisters. They informed the police that Saraswati and Sane had got married in a temple, and would hide their marital status.

Sane also concealed this fact from the police at first. Because of their age difference, the victim would introduce Sane as her uncle, the sisters told the police. Her sisters also told the police that Sane had been assaulting her for a long time.

“We will match Saraswati Vaidya’s DNA with that of her siblings, and would hand over her body to them for the last rites,” said DCP Jayant Bajbale of zone-1, Mira-Bhayander Vasai Virar police.

After leaving the orphanage at the age of 18, Vaidya came to Borivali in Mumbai and while looking for a job she met Sane in 2013. She had failed in two subjects, hence could not clear the Class 10 exam and thus was unable to get a job. Sane promised to get her a job and also promised to marry her. They then shifted from Borivali to Mira Road.

The police said that Sane is a shrewd man and has invested in the stock market. He has been trying to misguide the investigation by claiming many things. He has also changed his statements a few times. So we are investigating him thoroughly,” said an officer.
