Ahead of the civic budget for financial year 2014-15, Mayor Sunil Prabhu Friday met 14th Finance Commission’s chairman Y V Reddy and sought Rs 71,613 crore in financial support for construction, operation and maintenance of essential infrastructure over the next 10 years.
Apart from seeking Rs 5,441 crore for major road concretisation projects, the civic body has also sought Rs 9,000 crore for laying ducts across the city to have trench-free roads in order to avoid potholes.
In order to improve the solid waste management system in the city, the BMC is planning to spend Rs 1,617 crore over the next 10 years to construct waste-to-energy plants, environment mitigation and monitoring system and for scientific closure of Mulund dumping ground, among other projects.
While the civic administration has planned to spend a total of Rs 32,565 crore on sectors such as roads, solid waste management, fire services, education, healthcare, it plans to invest a massive Rs 39,000 crore for water and sewage projects during the next 10 years.
Urging the finance commission to help the civic body bear the losses it runs in the public transport sector, Prabhu said that the loss incurred by the BMC in running the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) services should be compensated by the state government or the central government. “The transport services provided by the BEST are subsidised for students, senior citizens and the disabled, which puts additional burden leading to operational and recurring losses,” said Prabhu.
