A massive fire broke out at a chemical godown along the Nashik Highway in the Bhiwandi area of Maharashtra’s Thane late Sunday. No injuries have been reported in the blaze, and the Bhiwandi Fire Brigade said that the fire was under control by Monday afternoon.
The fire was reported at 9.45 pm Sunday at the Sona Devi Logistics unit in Lonad Village in Bhiwandi. As the fire engulfed the chemical unit, dark smoke emanated from the godown, triggering panic in the area.
The Bhiwandi Fire Brigade deployed one fire vehicle on the site, alongside two firefighting vehicles procured from the Kalyan Fire Brigade. The agencies also roped in private water tankers to douse the flames.
While firefighting operations continued throughout the night, and the blaze was brought under control, the cooling operations are underway, according to officials from the Bhiwandi Fire Brigade.
A Bhiwandi Fire Brigade official told The Indian Express the structure where the fire broke out was a single-storied godown. “Whether the unit comprised only chemicals or other objects is yet to be assessed. We are still to determine the cause of the fire,” said the officer.
