The Mumbai police have arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly running over a 28-year-old woman he met at a party in Borivali early Wednesday. While the woman sustained internal injuries and is recuperating at a hospital, the Borivali police have tracked down the vehicle based on CCTV footage and placed the accused, identified as Vineet Shankarlal Dhiya, under arrest.
As per the woman’s complaint, she works at a spa in Borivali and had gone to a party at a hotel with two friends on Wednesday night. The woman said that she got acquainted with Dhiya, who was accompanied by two friends, at the party.
After partying at night, while leaving around 6 am, Dhiya, who was dropping his friends home, offered to drop her off as well, she said. The woman said that after he dropped off his friends, as their vehicle reached Gorai Road, her phone rang and Dhiya allegedly snatched it.
This led to a fight between the duo, following which Dhiya allegedly abused and assaulted her. Later, when she asked for her phone, he refused to return it, she claimed. The woman said that she then sat on the bonnet of his vehicle.
A police official said that Dhiya threatened to start driving and later drove at high speed. The woman lost her balance and fell in front of the car, following which he ran over her and fled from the spot, the official added.
Locals rushed the woman to Shatabdi Hospital, where doctors found that she had sustained internal injuries and began treatment. The hospital authorities alerted the Borivali police station, following which the woman’s statement was recorded.
Subsequently, an FIR was lodged against Dhiya on charges of attempt to culpable homicide and punishment for voluntarily causing hurt under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The police then scanned CCTV footage, following which they identified Dhiya and placed him under arrest on Thursday. He was remanded in police custody till Sunday.
