The crime branch of Mumbai Police on Saturday arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl in an auto-rickshaw in Juhu recently.
The accused was trying to escape to Nepal when the city police managed to arrest the accused.
According to the police, the accused, Surat Chufe Bhul, alias Sandeep Kalusingh Bhul, was known to the victim for quite some time.
On July 30, the accused took the girl to Juhu beach and later allegedly raped her in a stationary auto-rickshaw, the police said. On returning home, the girl told her parents about it, following which an FIR was registered at Juhu police station against the accused person under Section 376 of IPC and Section 4, 8, 12 of Pocso Act.
Citing the sensitive nature of the case, Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) Lakhmi Gautam pressed crime branch unit-9 officials to launch a parallel probe to trace the accused.
The accused found out that a police case has been filed against him, following which he escaped from the city. The Unit-9 team of inspector Data Nayak, Sachin Puranik and others was chasing him in Nalasopara, Delhi and Uttarakhand.
“We were able to detain the accused from Pauri Garhwal of Uttarakhand while he was trying to flee to Nepal. He was taken into custody. After proper legal formalities with local police, he was brought to Mumbai,” said inspector Nayak.
The accused was handed over to Juhu police station, inspector Puranik said.
