A 26-year-old man was arrested by the Kasturba Marg police on Saturday for allegedly trying to extort money from a bar manager in Borivali.

A 26-year-old man was arrested by the Kasturba Marg police on Saturday for allegedly trying to extort money from a bar manager in Borivali (East).

Police said, the accused,Ravi Barot, introduced himself as an acquaintance of ACP (Social Service Branch) Vasant Dhobale, who is known to raid bars where illicit activities take place. He then told the manager of the Charwalk Bar located on M G Road in Borivali (East) to pay money or he would complain to Dhobale that the bar was a front for flesh trade.

“He and his accomplice first went to the bar on March 23 and told the manager to pay him Rs 50,000. The manager gave him Rs 10,000 after which Barot and his accomplice left,” Rajendra Thakur senior inspector of Kasturba Marg police said.

On Friday at 10.30 pm,when Barot and his accomplice went to the bar again to allegedly demand the remaining Rs 40,000,the manager called Dhobale and informed him of the developments.

“Since Barot said he would get me to raid the bar if he was not paid money,I told the manager to inform the local police,” said Vasant Dhobale.

A trap was laid and Barot was nabbed. He has been booked under Section 384 (extortion) of the IPC.

“Barot was produced in court on Saturday and remanded in police custody until April 16. We are also on the lookout for his accomplice and have been told the other accused is a resident of Mira Road. We have formed teams to nab him soon,” Thakur said.
