Malegaon blast case: Special court directs all accused to be present for recording of statements

Also, celebrity car designer and manufacturer Dilip Chhabria was granted bail by a special court designated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act on Monday.

In the Malegaon 2008 blast case, the special court has directed all the accused to remain present on Tuesday for recording of their statements, stating that from now on it will be necessary that they are in court on fixed dates.
Special Judge A K Lahoti passed an order on Friday after exemption from appearance for a day was sought by BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur citing her ill health. The court permitted the exemption for the day noting that she is on medication but specified that she was only exempted from appearance on Friday.

“It is observed that the present accused (Thakur) and some other accused are not attending the court regularly on fixed dates. Time to time, their exemption application for the reasons put forth by them are also considered by the court. It is also observed that some accused are residents of other states and while moving the application they used to mention that they used to face the difficulty to get the tickets at the 11th hour. To overcome the aforesaid difficulty, the dates to all accused are given in advance. Therefore, hereinafter, the said issue will not be considered…” the court said. The court is currently recording the statements of the accused under section 313 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Dilip Chhabria granted bail in money laundering case

Celebrity car designer and manufacturer Dilip Chhabria was granted bail by a special court designated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act on Monday.

Chhabria and two others were granted bail in connection with a case filed by the ED based on a predicate offence filed by the Mumbai police alleging cheating by his firm. The accused were granted bail after they appeared before the court which had earlier this month issued notices.

Former chief manager of bank gets 2 years in jail; case filed 30 years ago

A former chief manager of a public bank was sentenced to two years in jail in a case filed 30 years ago, for causing wrongful loss to the bank.

Ramchandra Joshi was convicted in two cases, where two complaints were filed by the Bank of Baroda in 1994, alleging that losses were caused to the bank by misappropriation by the accused.

In the second case, Joshi was sentenced to one year in jail. The court also directed Joshi to pay a fine of over Rs 4 lakh in both the cases. Two other accused who were chargesheeted died pending trial. Joshi was the chief manager of Walkeshwar road branch of the bank at the time of the offence.
