The expert committee constituted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to decide the fate of the Malabar Hill reservoir carried out the second phase of the inspection on Monday and found that barring a few pockets in compartment 1C that required minor repair works, the reservoir was structurally sound.
Alpa Sheth, structural engineer and a member on the expert committee, told The Indian Express, “During the course of our inspection, we observed that compartment 1A and 1B are in a very good condition. In compartment 1C, while portions built in plain cement concrete were in a good shape, small portions built in reinforced concrete showed some corrosion.”
Adding that the corrosions are repairable, Sheth said, “Our exhaustive inspection revealed that there is no need to demolish the structure.” The committee is yet to submit the final report.
On December 7, the panel had carried out the first round of scrutiny, which revealed that compartments 2A and 2B were in a healthy state.
Having completed the audit of the entire reservoir, the expert committee is slated to carry out a few rounds of deliberations before their final verdict.
To aid the inspection works, the civic body partially emptied the tank’s 1A, 1B and 1C compartments — portions which were taken up for inspection on Monday — affecting water supply in several wards of the island city. The civic body imposed a 10 per cent water cut across the city’s A ward, C ward, D Ward as well as the G/south and G/North ward wards for 2 hours between 8 am and 10 am.
Following the audit, the tank was refilled. However, the civic body maintained that the affected areas may continue to receive muddy water for the next 24 hours. “As a precautionary measure, citizens should filter and boil the water before drinking it,” read a bulletin issued by the civic body.
