In a first, the Maharashtra government has formed a committee to decide skill education policy for the state that will ensure effective convergence of various initiatives for skill development.
The 10-member committee of academicians, experts from skill education and entrepreneurship as well as industry and government representatives to form draft skill-policy was formed by the skill development and entrepreneurship department.
An official from the department said, “For capacity building of manpower and to encourage entrepreneurship among youngsters, there are various projects, initiatives and programmes in various parts of the state. Various educational institutions are offering multiple types of skill-oriented courses… There has to be coordination of all these so that effective steps can be taken in creating a quality manpower as well as in incubating enterprises; which this policy will intend to achieve.”
The Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) across Maharashtra are offering various skill-oriented courses. Additionally, many universities as well as autonomous colleges have started offering degree-level courses pertaining to particular skills, especially those catering to local industry needs. As universities are instructed to encourage entrepreneurship, many state-universities have formed incubation centres or start-up clinics.
“While all of this is running simultaneously, it is important that there are no duplicates. At the same time, coordinated approach in these opportunities at various levels will help in creating a quality manpower for different industries,” said the official adding that the committee is expected to submit a draft within a month.
