Maharashtra’s medical education department is positive of finally having 1000 more seats in government medical colleges (GMC) from the upcoming academic year.
It has issued orders for approval of posts of teaching and non-teaching staff to be appointed in these colleges, hoping to apply for approval from the National Medical Council (NMC) before June. In the absence of a clear timeline however, students and parents are wary of keeping high hopes.
The list of these ten GMCs include – Hingoli, Vardha, Gadchiroli, Bhandara, Washim, Buldhana, Jalna, Palghar and Thane. The state cabinet in the year 2023 had approved the plan of starting one GMC in each of these places having a capacity of 100 students per college.
Commissioner for medical education, Rajeev Nivatkar shared that the exercise of post-filling for all the newly announced medical colleges is aimed at readying colleges for the NMC inspection, which is mandatory to include for these colleges in the admission process.
“While we have already involved MPSC for post-filling of teachers on close to 1100 posts, we have also approached agencies for class III employee recruitment. All these efforts are aimed toward keeping the colleges ready for NMC inspection. We hope to get NMC approval before the upcoming academic year begins so that all these new colleges will be able to admit students,” said Niwatkar adding that the department has already received an eligibility certificate from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS).
Students and parents however are finding it hard to believe that the colleges will start admissions in the upcoming academic year. One of the parents, Sudha Shenoy, said, “Going by their promise, NMC approvals should be obtained by May so that the college can be included in the admission process starting June/July. It is a long, lengthy process with multiple visits and there are only a couple of months in hand.” According to parents, even if few of these colleges actually begin to admit students from the upcoming academic year, it will be a great relief.
