Maharashtra gets 68 new seats (3 per cent of existing seats) for post-graduation (PG) courses in medicine with the National Medical Council (NMC) having approved PG courses in four existing colleges for academic year 2024-25. Sources said the number of new seats are likely to increase further with more approvals in the pipeline.
Last year, the state had a total of 2,303 seats for PG medical admissions including government (1,499) and private (804). With newly approved courses, the intake capacity for PG medical courses in Maharashtra has risen to 2,371 seats in total, including 1,533 in government and 838 seats in private colleges.
This according to aspirants is a sizable increase in medical PG intake in the state. Fewer seats were leading to tough competition every year.
These new options of colleges for PG courses are– Terna Medical College in Nerul (22), Prakash Medical College (12) in Sangli, Civic medical college (17) Nerul and ESIC medical college (17) in Andheri. “These colleges did not offer PG courses earlier. But as medical PG admissions are yet to be announced a few more seats will be added to this list, as an increase in seats will be approved for existing courses too,” said Sudha Shenoy, a parent. The move has been welcome as a number of of seats in medical courses are too few, she added.
Of 22 new seats at Terna Medical College, there will be 3 seats each for community medicine and obstetrics & gynecology, 6 seats for pathology, 8 seats for anesthesiology, 5 seats for radio-diagnosis. There will be 12 PG seats in Prakash Medical College which are distributed in 5 seats for paediatrics, 3 seats for ophthalmology, 4 seats for radio diagnosis and 5 seats for obstetrics & gynecology.
Of 17 seats in ESIC Medical College in Andheri, 3 seats each are for anesthesiology and pathology and 2 seats each for biochemistry, general surgery and paediatrics. Whereas at Civic Medical College in Nerul, the 17 seats are distributed as 8 for obstetrics and gynecology, 4 for paediatrics, 3 for general medicine and 2 for orthopaedics.
According to officials, after a significant increase of 800 new seats in Under Graduate (UG) courses from this academic year. With approval for 8 new government medical colleges, each having 100 seats; Maharashtra’s UG medical seats have increased by 800 in the academic year 2024-25.
