In a bid to ensure party workers do not lose the morale as a result of recent high-profile exits from the Maharashtra unit of the Congress and to keep the leadership busy by avoiding infighting, the state unit has been given a slew of programmes and activities from the state to ward level, ahead of the 2024 general elections. This is in contrast to the inactivity three to four months ago.
The state party organisation has been given a direction to stay focused on arranging public rallies, small meetings and study workshops at different levels i.e., from state to ward level, to ensure that workers do not lose focus.
The party recently held divisional meetings at all six divisions, bringing senior and local leaders on the same platform. The Mumbai unit of the Congress has also held two public meetings covering four out of six Lok Sabha constituencies and the next meeting will be on February 22.
Ramesh Chennithala, All India Congress Committee (AICC) incharge for Maharashtra, accepted that a number of organisational tasks have been given to the party. “It is important that the leaders and workers are kept busy… It strengthens the organisation and also keep the cadre on its tows, ready for battle,” he said.
Chennithala added that party workers are the backbone of the organisation and irrespective of any leader quitting, “we remain a strong force because of our workers”. He added that Maharashtra remains a crucial state for the opposition and MVA is in a good position to win maximum seats out of 48.
Following the state-level study workshop at Lonavala on February 16 and 17, a similar programme will be organised in every district. “This is a part of the party campaign. One has to put enthusiasm in workers and motivate them to campaign for the party and allies in the upcoming general elections,” said a senior party leader from the Maharashtra Congress.
The task is to reach out to 10,000 party cadre through such programmes in the next one or two weeks.
In addition, the party has made the pending appointments of assembly observers in all 288 assembly segments to oversee the preparations for elections. Similarly, the appointments in Mumbai at ward level have also been completed. “Each of the senior leader in the state unit has been tasked with organising local meetings and workshops. The report will be shared with the leadership,” the leader said.
