With a pass percentage of 88.13 per cent, the Mumbai division yet again ranked the lowest among all nine divisions in Maharashtra as the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Class 12 results were declared on Thursday. This is the second consecutive year that the Mumbai division has ranked the lowest – last year, the Mumbai division had a pass percentage of 90.91 per cent.
The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education declared the Class 12 results on Thursday. Out of a total of 14,16,371 candidates who had registered for the exam, 12,92,468 passed, recording a pass percentage of 91.25 per cent for the entire state. In the Mumbai division, 3,29,337 students appeared for the HSC exam out of which 2,90,258 passed the exam.
While 88.13 per cent is a massive drop from the inflated pass percentage of 99.79 per cent in 2021 – no exams were held due to the pandemic — the Mumbai division had fared much better in 2020 too, when it recorded a pass percentage of 89.35 per cent. In 2020, Mumbai had ranked sixth among all nine divisions of the Maharashtra state board.
In sheer numbers, however, the Mumbai division has the highest number of students passing the HSC examination. “Considering that this division had the highest number of students registered for HSC, this was anticipated,” said an official from the Mumbai division office of the Maharashtra state board. Mumbai also has the highest number of students – 38,884 – scoring distinction and above.
According to the teachers, however, the Mumbai division is just returning to its regular pass percentage figures, pre-pandemic. “It did not cross 90 per cent before the pandemic. This was expected considering the resumption of complete normalcy post-pandemic. After the exam relaxation in the year 2021, last year students did enjoy various facilities such as a reduced syllabus, extra time to write… But this year, examinations were conducted as per the traditional practice with a complete syllabus, sans relaxations,” a teacher from a suburban school said.
