Ahead of the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024, the Mumbai police have booked several people for violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Voting began in the six constituencies in Mumbai – North, North West, North East, North Central, South Central and South – on Monday morning.
The Kurar police detained a 53-year-old woman from the Kurar Appapada area of Malad East for carrying illicit liquor and seized four whiskey bottles from her.
An offence was registered against her, and she was allowed to leave after being served with a notice to join the police in their investigation at a later date. This action was taken after a team from the local flying squad of the Election Commission (EC) alerted the police.
The Sir J J Marg police registered a case in connection with an appeal for voting on the basis of religion at the entrance of Saboo Siddiqui Hospital in Dongri. The police identified the person who put up the poster on the hospital gate following which a notice to him to join the police probe at a later date.
In another case from the western suburbs, the D N Nagar police registered an FIR against a person for allegedly promoting a particular political party on Whatsapp groups even though the campaigning period was over. He was also issued a notice.
An officer said, “In several of these cases, it is the EC’s flying squads that approach the local police after they spot some violations. We, too, have been carrying bandobast at various spots in the city to ensure there are no law and order issues.”
