Ahead of the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024, the Mumbai police have booked several people for violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Voting began in the six constituencies in Mumbai—North, North West, North East, North Central, South Central and South—on Monday morning.
Kurar police detained a 53-year-old woman from Kurar Appapada area of Malad East for carrying illicit liquor and seized four whiskey bottles from her. After an offence was registered, she was issued a notice to join the police in their investigation at a later date, and then allowed to leave. This action was taken after a team from the local flying squad of Election Commission (EC) alerted the police.
The Sir JJ Marg police registered a case in connection with an appeal for voting on the basis of religion at the entrance of Saboo Siddique Hospital in Dongri. The police identified the person who put up the poster on the hospital gate following which a notice was issued to him to join the police investigation at a later date.
In another case in the western suburbs, DN Nagar police registered an FIR against a person for allegedly promoting a particular political party on Whatsapp groups even though the campaigning period was over. He was also issued a notice.
An officer said, “In several cases, it is the EC’s flying squads that approach the local police after they spot violations. We, too, have been making arrangements at various spots in the city to maintain law and order.”
