Mumbai continued to receive heavy showers on Tuesday amid a yellow alert sounded in the region. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city is likely to experience thunderstorms coupled with lightning and moderate rain until Thursday morning, following which, the intensity of showers is likely to recede.

Data from the weather bureau showed that after receiving 3 mm rain between Monday and Tuesday morning, intermittent spells continued to sweep the city throughout Tuesday. Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Tuesday, the Colaba coastal observatory clocked in 11.2 mm. Rain continued late into the evening with the IMD issuing a yellow nowcast warning at 4.30 pm for Mumbai’s suburban and island city districts as well as Thane and Raigad.

Even as the IMD declared the withdrawal of southwest monsoon on October 10, Mumbai has been experiencing post monsoon spells since October 20 owing to a depression over east central Arabian Sea as well as a trough running across the upper air cyclonic circulation.

Unseasonal showers have brought respite from the October Heat, which had gripped the city since the withdrawal of southwest monsoon earlier in the month. After temperatures had soared up to 37 degrees in the previous week, the Santacruz observatory clocked in 32.8 degrees on the mercury scales on Tuesday, marking a dip of nearly two degrees below the normal.

Rains have also spurred a dip in pollution levels, with AQI touching 58 (which is categorised as satisfactory) on Tuesday morning. While no yellow warnings have been issued for Mumbai and Thane districts after Thursday, IMD meteorologists stated that rain is here to stay until the end of October.
