Kin say was under stress after assault on train: Abetment of suicide case filed after 19-yr-old’s death in Kalyan

The Kolsewadi police registered a case of abetment of suicide against unidentified persons in connection with an alleged suicide by a 19-year-old student Arnav Khaire in his residence at Kalyan.

The deceased’s father Rajendra Khaire alleged that his son was assaulted by a group of four to five people on a local train after an argument over not speaking in Marathi.

Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde visited Khaire’s family on Saturday and assured them that police will investigate the matter. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also interacted with Arnav’s family members via a video call, and said the government was committed to providing justice in the case.

Khaire, who lives in Tisgaon Naka of Kalyan East had given a written complaint in the Kolsewadi police station after his son’s death.

He alleged that his son Arnav Khaire was going to college in Mulund by local train from Kalyan railway station on November 18 and as he did not speak in Marathi, a group of people beat him up.He further alleged that his son was under mental stress due to assault and died by suicide, said a police officer.Khaire’s statement was recorded again and a case has been registered under section 108 (abetment of suicide) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the BNS against unidentified persons, said a police official.

Two separate police teams have been formed to investigate the crime, and the investigation is underway with the help of the Railway Police. Earlier, the police had registered an accidental death report.

The police have identified the train in which the victim had travelled on November 18 around 8:50am.He returned from the college and reached Kalyan around 12pm and after that he went directly home.The police are analysing the CCTV footage to identify the person who was travelling with him and assaulted him.The incident came to light when his father and mother came home in the evening and found the bedroom was locked from inside. The door was broken open and he was found hanging, said the official.
